ABET
National Training Institute
Piketko’s management have been
attending management training sessions held by the National Training
Institute (NTI) for a number of years. The training is aimed at turning
managers into competent leaders. It underlines the importance of
strategy-setting, planning, objectives, delegating, respect and motivation
among workers, and between management and subordinates.
Training is aimed at the different
management levels.

Senior Management:
Training modules includes Cost Management, Quality Control, Success
Factors, Management of Success Factors and Conflict Management.

Operational Management:
Training modules includes Management Theories, Managerial Duties,
Management Control, Handling of Subordinates, Responsible Decision Making,
Motivation, Setting Objectives, and Delegation.

Senior Supervisors:
Training modules includes Responsibilities of a Supervisor,
Functions of a Supervisor, Duties of a Supervisor.

Sorting and Packing Supervisors, Line
Operators: Training modules
includes Daily Programs, Quality Management, Fruit Safety, Communication
with Line Managers, and Communication with Packers and Sorters.
The
group of Junior Managers
has recently completed the first phase of a formal in-house Management
Development Program. “The group from Piketko is the first in the country
that has completed the program up to module 5 of phase 1” says Loudie
Groenewald, Director of the NTI and course presenter.

Adult education – ABET
During 2003 Piketko (Pty) Ltd
enrolled 30 of its personnel in ABET – an adult based education programme.
Evening classes are held at the Piketberg Community Learning Centre. The
Centre forms part of the Western Cape Department of Education Department.
The main objectives of the
training are:

To better the workers’ education

To increase workers’ skills

To offer opportunities for further
development and promotion

To enhance workers’ outlook on life.
Reports from the Centre are
received quarterly. The reports show that there is good interaction between
the workers. They are very enthusiastic about learning and they are making
good progress
