Cooling and packing season

The cooling and packing season starts in November and ends in September:

  • From the beginning of November: cooling of peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots

  • From January for 8 weeks: cooling of grapes

  • From middle January: packing and cooling of pears and apples

  • From middle March: packing and cooling of citrus

  • End of September:  packing of last citrus.

 

A brief history

Piketko (Pty) Ltd was established in 1983, originally as a cooperative to pack, cool and store fresh fruit for the export and local markets. In 1994 the business entity was changed to a company, with WPK and PLK as shareholders. In 1999 the company was bought by 10 farmers who then became the only shareholders.

 

Although shareholding has changed since then, Piketko today still specialises in the packing, cooling and cold storage of fresh fruit supplied by its shareholders and various other producers in the Piketberg, Porterville and Citrusdal areas.

 

Our mission

Piketko’s mission is to add value to the products that is handled at a price that is financially acceptable to its shareholders and at a service level that is required by its clients.

 

Social responsibility

The company accepts its social responsibility by:

  • Providing training and development to employees at all levels

  • Assisting employees financially in an adult-based education and training program

  • Providing in-house skills training.
