Health and safety

Health and Safety Act and Safety Committee

It is important for Piketko that its personnel are healthy and work in a safe working environment. The Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act Nr. 85 of 1993) requires of each employer to maintain a workplace that is safe and without risk for the employee’s health or safety, free of dangerous chemicals, machinery, processes, etc. which can lead to injury or sickness. The employer is responsible for providing the employee with essential safety clothing or equipment.

To attain this, Piketko appointed a Safety Committee that consists of 10 members. Meetings are held every five weeks to discuss dangerous situations and to make recommendations.

Fire Prevention Team

Because Piketko stores a large amount of packing material, it is a high-risk area for fire hazards. A Fire Prevention Team consisting of 9 members were trained by Stop Fire Complete Fire Protection and are always present on the premises.

First Aid Team

Piketko has a First Aid Team consisting of 11 members who were trained by the First Responder First Aid Training Organisation. The team consists of full-time staff members who are always on standby for any casualties that may arise during the normal working day.
